Enjoy relaxing on a sandy beach without the two-hour drive to the shore at The Beach on North Broad, a pop-up attraction that transforms the front lawn of Leon H. Sullivan Human Services Center into a 1,500-square-foot beach.

The pop-up paradise, located on North Broad and Master streets, is free to visit and open to the public for two weekends in August, debuting during Philly Free Streets on Saturday.

BEACH ON NORTH BROAD FAST FACTS

  • A 1,500-square-foot beach with 50 tons of sand lands on the front lawn of Leon H. Sullivan Human Services Center.
  • The beach is open August 11 & 12 and 18 & 19. Hours vary.
  • Visitors can relax in beach chairs, play games, catch a free movie and more.
  • Entry is free and open to the public.

Community development non-profit the North Broad Renaissance partnered with real estate development company The Goldenberg Group to create this summer installation that’s fun for all ages.

Beach chairs and umbrellas sit on 50 tons of sand while hammocks and giant Adirondack chairs line the grassy areas around the man-made beach. When not lounging, visitors can play classic beach games like corn hole and paddle toss. Jumbo-size games — including a giant Scrabble board! — are set up around the lawn as well.

The Beach on North Broad debuts on Saturday, August 11 during Philly Free Streets, which runs from City Hall straight down North Broad Street to Erie Avenue this year.

Special programming on Saturday, August 11 includes a mobile book market and book swap with Tree House Books and activities for kids hosted by Playworks Pennsylvania. Esteemed local sports team mascot The Phillie Phanatic (!) makes a special appearance at the beach from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., too.

The following Saturday, August 18, the Beach on North Broad hosts a free screening of The Wiz at 8 p.m.

Make plans now to soak up the sun at this new summertime pop-up attraction!
